Blackberry Storm sells a million units, no threat to iPhone

New York, January 29: Blackberry Storm has sold one million units after roughly over two months of its Nov. 21 launch in the United States. The start is surely strong but those figures are nowhere close to challenge the big rival – Apple iPhone.

Reviews for Research In Motion’s ambitious Storm have not been first-class as the consumers have been complaining about bugs and performance lags. According to the Wall Street Journal, ‘Storm’ kicked off to a “bumpy” beginning.

But Verizon, the exclusive partner of RIM for the sale of this model in the U.S., promptly stood up to the defense. Citing the million units already sold, a company spokeswoman said, “That's not a bumpy start.”

With the extended touch screen adorning the whole face of the phone, Blackberry Storm was thought to be the potential threat to Apple’s much-hyped iPhone. Sales and consumer satisfaction, however, suggest that Apple is safe in its territory.

iPhone, in the first quarter of its launch, had sold 2.4 million units.

During the recent holiday period, Blackberry managed to sell only half a million of Storm units while Apple captured more than 25 percent of the North-American market with sales of more than two million iPhones.

Though the software issues in the Storm were fixed to a certain extent by the company soon after its launch, consumers are also facing problems with the design. The device misses a QWERTY keyboard in portrait mode, a feature that is offered by the iPhone and most other touchscreen phones.

However, further advancements on the software front have been promised by the company and the next update is rumored to be delivered next month.

The battle will soon get fiercer as Nokia is also bringing up its 5800 model, which has the similar touchscreen feature, and, like the iPhone, is especially tailored for music buffs.

With growing number of players in the market for these smartphones, consumers will not only have more choices on the offer, they will also benefit from the competitive prices.
