Google in pursuit of Yelp

San Franscisco -- U.S. Internet giant Google has intensified talks to buy Yelp, a Web site that reviews restaurants, spas, bars and shops, sources close the talks said.

Talks of a purchase that have simmered for several years became more deliberate two months ago, The New York Times reported Friday.

A price of more than $500 million has been discussed. Yelp expects revenues of about $30 million for 2009, its fifth year in business, a source said.

The revenue stream comes from advertising that appears alongside search results or next to profiles of a business competitor, the Times said.

Two former PayPal employees Jeremy Stoppelman and Russel Simmons founded Yelp, which would give inroads to Google in a pursuit of local advertising revenue.
