Robert Schimmel's arrest
The 59-year-old comedian was arrested early Saturday in Los Angeles after an alleged fight at his home in Calabasas, the state County Sheriff's Sgt. Jay Royal confirmed.
Schimmel was taken to the county jail for investigation of spousal assault, and was later released on $50,000 bail.
Authorities at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded about 12:30 a.m. to a call about an alleged altercation between Schimmel and his wife. After reaching the comedian’s home on Cielo Circle in Calabasas, cops found his wife, 35-year-old wife, Melissa, with evidence of a physical confrontation.
According to TMZ, “Cops got a call to come to Schimmel’s Calabasas home at around 12:30 AM. They observed physical marks on his wife. Law enforcement tells us there was an argument that allegedly turned violent.”
The X-rated comic is scheduled to appear in court in Van Nuys on Tuesday.
Schimmel's personal life and illness
Schimmel, also known for his battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, met his second and current wife Melissa during one of his hospital stays with the disease. Melissa was a friend to his daughter and just two years her senior.
In 1998, the Scottsdale, Arizona native suffered a heart attack, and in June 2000, was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a cancer of lymphocytes, which is a type of white blood cell that moves around the body as part of its role in the immune system.
His 2008 memoir "Cancer on $5 a Day: How Good Humor Got Me Through the Toughest Journey of My Life" chronicles his battle with the disease.
Schimmel married his first wife, Vicki, in 1977, and they had four children together.
