Time watching DVR shows increases in U.S.

New York -- Nielsen says the development of the digital video recorder has led to a jump in the amount of time Americans spend watching recorded television programs.

A report issued by the ratings agency concluded that among the average of 143 hours of TV viewers in the prime 25-34 age bracket watch per month are more than 29 hours of recorded shows, The Hollywood Reporter said Saturday.

"The emergence of the DVR as a widely distributed device has changed viewing behaviors in many homes," Nielsen wrote in the study.

Nielsen said the 29 hours of recorded viewing in the second quarter of this year was a 20 percent increase over the previous year.

Powder in Palin mail empties 'DWTS' studio

Los Angeles -- A white powder found in an envelope among Bristol Palin's "Dancing with the Stars" fan mail in Los Angeles turned out to be harmless, ABC said.

The network issued a written statement Friday saying Los Angeles firefighters who responded determined the substance was talcum powder.

The New York Daily News said Saturday part of the building was evacuated for a period.

Palin, the daughter of 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, has been staying alive in the ABC dance competition despite rumors that conservative viewers have been voting for her because they like her mom's politics rather than for her skills as a hoofer, the newspaper said.

Fox moving 'American Idol' off Tuesdays

New York -- Fox announced it is moving "American Idol" to Wednesday night and then will shift it again to Thursday starting in January.

"Idol" currently airs Tuesday, but the plan calls for the talent contest to air on both Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning in January.

The Hollywood Reporter said Fox's goal is to use "Idol" as a lead-in to its "Human Target" series on Wednesday and at the same time compete with the new CBS series "Live to Dance," which stars Paula Abdul.

Thursday is generally the highest advertising revenue night in U.S. prime time. "Idol" will also give a boost to the new Fox reality series "Million Dollar Drop." The struggling "Fringe" will be moved to Friday, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Oprah stuns crowd with 'favorite things'
