"It's just us not, me not being mature enough, or something, and having a kid and thinking ... it could be better – better for us to separate for a while," Johnston, 19, said in an exclusive interview with Neal Karlinsky of Good Morning America.
Johnston and Palin split about "a week, two weeks" ago, after they got engaged in a scuffle. "We were just, we were in a fight. And trying to see if we can make things work,” Johnston said. “But this is what it kind of ended up turning into.”
Though it was a mutual decision to part ways and remain “friends” for sometime, Johnston already seems to be missing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's eldest daughter.
"I'd like to get back together with her. I don't know what she's thinking,” he said.
18-year-old Bristol Palin gave birth to a son, Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston, on Dec. 27. Despite his tiff with Palin, Johnston says nothing keeps him from seeing his son regularly. He claims to be very fond of his son and says the little one has changed his life.
"I'd give anything for [Tripp], to be with him," he said. "[There are] a lot of changes when you're a father, when you hold him for the first time, you know. I don't do a lot of things I used to anymore.”
Meanwhile, Sarah Palin was taking a break from governing the nation's largest state to lend a hand to Juneau's Girl Scout Troop 32 for selling cookies, after the group lost its previous earnings in a robbery.
When asked about her daughter, Palin said, "Bristol is doing great, just great!"
