Smokers could face ban behind the wheel
London -- Motorists in Britain may face a new law that would ban smoking while behind the wheel.
The Observer reported on the proposed ban, meant to cut down on the number of road accidents. Over the weekend, the Department of Health said it would seriously consider such a law, which also is being considered in Germany, Australia and the United States.
The potential ban has drawn criticism from some who say it is an attack on personal freedom to tell people what to do in their own cars.
In July, Britain will implement a ban on smoking in public places. Anti-smoking campaigners and public safety advocates argue that when smoking becomes illegal in public places, more people will light up in their cars, hence the need for the ban while driving.
In 2006, there were a reported 3,201 fatalities on Britain's roads.
