Ottawa -- Canadians made fewer trips to the United States in September than in August, although more U.S. residents traveled into Canada, federal statistics show.

"The 1.7 percent (overall) decrease in travel abroad by Canadian residents was primarily the result of 2.1 percent fewer trips to the United States in September," Statistics Canada reported Wednesday. "Canadian residents took 690,000 trips to overseas countries in September, up 0.4 percent from August."

As for travel into Canada, the number of trips U.S. residents made was up 2.1 percent in September to nearly 1.7 million, the report said.

However, incoming travel by residents of countries other than the United States was down 1.3 percent in September compared with August, or 327,000 trips, StatsCan said.
