MLB: N.Y. Yankees 8, Philadelphia 5

Philadelphia -- Andy Pettitte benefited from three homers Saturday and the New York Yankees took a 2-1 World Series lead with an 8-5 win over Philadelphia.

In six innings, Pettitte (1-0) gave up four runs and five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

He also hit a fifth-inning RBI single and extended his career playoff record to 17 victories.

Nick Swisher had two hits -- one a sixth-inning solo homer.

Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run fourth-inning homer.

Johnny Damon's RBI double snapped a 3-3 fifth-inning tie, and Hideki Matsui hit a solo shot in the eighth for the Yankees, who made the most of eight hits.

Jayson Werth led Philadelphia with two solo homers off Pettitte.

Carlos Ruiz hit a solo shot in the ninth, while Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino had one RBI apiece for the Phillies, who were held to six hits by five New York pitchers.

The losing pitcher was starter Cole Hamels (0-1), the 2008 World Series MVP.
