Outreach center named for Gokey's wife

Los Angeles -- "American Idol" finalist Danny Gokey performed at a celebration marking the 15th anniversary of the Los Angeles Dream Center this week, organizers said.

The former Queen of Angels Hospital is now a refuge for the city's 11,000 homeless, abandoned teens, gang members, and those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction, the group said.

Gokey this week announced -- along with Dream Center founder Matthew Barnett -- the naming of the Dream Center's Youth Outreach Center after his wife Sophia, who died of complications from surgery for a congenital heart condition shortly before he auditioned for "Idol."

Gokey is being recognized for his commitment to the work of the inner-city relief organization through Sophia's Heart, a foundation he recently created in his wife's memory, the center said in a release.
