U.S. markets post gains Thursday

New York -- U.S. markets posted gains for the eighth consecutive session Thursday as stocks climbed steadily after a tentative start.

The Commerce Department estimated the second quarter gross domestic product shrank by 1 percent, confirming an earlier estimate. The figure was 0.5 percentage points higher than economists had predicted.

After early losses, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 37.11 points, 0.39 percent, to 9,580.63. The S&P 500 index added 2.86 points, 0.28 percent, to 1,030.98. The Nasdaq composite index gained 0.16 percent, 3.30 points, to 2,027.73.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,612 stocks advanced and 1,368 declined on a volume of 5.7 billion shares traded.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury fell 9/32 to yield 3.466 percent.

The euro rose to $1.4354 compared to Wednesday's $1.4255. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 93.51 yen from Wednesday's 94.17 percent.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index lost 1.56 percent, 165.74 points, to 10,473.97. In London, the FTSE 100 lose 21.23 points, 0.43 percent, to 4,896.35.
