Markets mixed Wednesday

New York -- U.S. stock indexes were mixed Wednesday with the U.S. Labor Department saying consumer prices dropped 0.1 percent in March.

The New York State Federal Reserve said manufacturing activity in the state declined, although at a slower pace than recent months.

In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 38.79 points, or
0.49 percent, to 7.958.97. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 0.43 percent, 3.58 points, to 845.08. The Nasdaq composite index shed 5.35 points, 0.33 percent, to 1,630.37.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury bond rose 2/32 to yield 2.783 percent.

The euro fell to $1.3182, compared to Tuesday's $1.3276. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar rose to 99.55 yen, compared to Tuesday's 98.86 yen.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index lost 99.72 points to 8,742.96, off 1.13 percent.
