New Delhi, April 14 -- India's staggered general elections begin Thursday. Here are some facts on the first of the five phases:

States: 17

Constituencies - 124

Candidates - 1,715

Women candidates - 122

Electorate - 143.1 million

Polling staff - 900,000

Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) - 310,066

Vulnerable villages/hamlets - 23,000
