Apple’s three of the top five selling applications are games which includes Tap Tap Revenge, Touch Hockey: FS5, and Pac-Man.
Brian Jurutka, vice president of comScore said in a statement, "It's impressive that a game like Tapulous's Tap Tap Revenge can attract a higher penetration among Apple app users than apps for larger and more established brands."
"Tap Tap's success demonstrates that there is ample opportunity in the app space for any publisher to obtain significant distribution with a product that engages users. Since the number of app users is growing nearly ten percent each month, that opportunity will only continue to grow for both existing and emerging app developers," he added.
Apple’s iphone is a cellphone with web-surfing gadget and digital media player whereas ipod touch has all the features of iphone less being a cellphone. But surprisingly one of the devices' most popular uses is as a hand-held video game system.
Stan Ng, Apple's senior director of product marketing said, "This was an amazing surprise to us to see how much games have taken off."
Tap Tap Revenge was the most downloaded application and Background was the second most downloaded application. With Background app, users can change the background image on their device.
Games developers have created nearly 1,700 games since the online App Store launched in June which are more than twice the number available in the store's second-largest category, entertainment.
According to comScore, more than half the app store users visited popular gaming sites, and were three times as likely to visit social networking sites.
