20 pilgrims killed in Punjab road accident

Anandpur Sahib (Punjab), March 31 -- At least 20 pilgrims were killed and about 65 injured when a truck carrying them from the Hindu shrine of Naina Devi in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh overturned near this Punjab town early Tuesday, police said.

The injured were rushed to the government hospital here for treatment. Six of them, who were in serious condition, were taken to the Post-graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) at Chandigarh, 100 km from the accident spot, police officials here said.

The truck, full with pilgrims, including women and children, was returning after the group paid obeisance at the Naina Devi shrine last night during the 'Navratras' festival. The pilgrims belonged to a village near Machhiwara town near Ludhiana in Punjab.
