This Google purchase has led to a leap in the pre-market trading as shares of Himax Technologies, the semi conductor manufacturer. Is this an indication that the Google Glass is ramping up?

Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, and Intel are known to have invested in HDI. A subsidiary to the Tiawanese company, Himax Display will surely focus strongly on developing liquid crystals on silicon chips(LCOS) that are used for Google Glass and some other wearable computing products. Well, the Google stake does speak volumes it seems! Himax is responsible for designing displays and chips that are used in mobile phones , televisions etc.

According to the company the purchase investment is carried out in order to “fund production upgrades, expand capacity and further enhance production capabilities.”

As we wait anxiously for the valuations of HDI or Google’s stake, the CFO of Himax, Jackie Chang, maintains his silence keeping the information private at the moment and she admits to disclose only that the announcement made is enough information demanded by the SEC. She was heard commenting “We are delighted to enter into the agreement with Google.”

The share rise

The current market cap of Himax Technologies trading on NASDAQ shows a figure of $876.7 million.

On Friday the shares had closed down at about $5.17 (down 3.36%) . The trade analysts expect a further increase as the recent developments show the shares trading almost 40% higher than before. Himax that was set up around 2004, was focused to increase the production facilities since long and now may be breathing a sigh of relief as it sees more number of people showing interest in wearable computers like Google Glass.

Google now steps past its cloud based and software services to aspire for a place as a vertically integrated tech company. The 6.3% stake hints that Google can book up to 14.8% share in HDI.

Himax thrilled

Jordan Wu, president and CEO of Himax hints that “Google is a preeminent global technology leader. We are delighted to receive this investment and to form a strategic partnership with Google”. He further states “Beginning the second quarter of this year, we had already begun expanding capacity to meet demand for our LCOS product line.

This investment from Google further validates our commitment to developing breakthrough technologies and state‐of‐the‐art production facilities. We look forward to leveraging this investment and our collective expertise with Google to create unique and transformational LCOS technologies for many years ahead.”

At the moment Himax has about 81.5% of the subsidiary and Google’s acquisition of the shares will be concluding in the third quarter of 2013.
6.3% of semiconductor firm Himax Google google Glass HDI Himax Display Himax Technologies Intel Khosla Ventures Kleiner Perkins pre-market trading stock market update Technology Technology Top Story transformational LCOS technologies United States Tue, 23 Jul 2013 07:58:55 +0000 Minnie Mahendru 1701713376 at http://themoneytimes.com Intel to launch its Virtual Cable service plan soon! http://themoneytimes.com/featured/20130614/intel-launch-its-virtual-cable-service-plan-soon-id-1701713235.html

Latest from the tech world is that Intel is trying something new with the virtual cable network. Using this creation Intel would be able to sell unlimited number of television channels over the Internet with a help of a set top box.

This multi million project requires sponsors which according to the sources, Intel is busy approaching, thus to avoid licensing difficulties. This new virtual cable network would be rolled out on a city by city basis rather than nationwide so that Intel has no issues with the content providers.

Distributors make it difficult for Intel
This largest ever chip building company, Intel is all set to be recognised not only as a chip making company but also a name which every common man uses in his living room through the medium of the virtual cable network. For this LAN to materialise Intel, has to overcome several hurdles, especially by the various satellite distributors.

Companies like Time Warner Cable and other cable companies are trying their level best to let Intel loose its battle in the virtual world, but Intel is determined to move forward with its plan. Using several methods to pressurise the Chip giant, the distributors are approaching the cable channel owners so that the companies do not sign any long term contracts with Intel.

However, Intel is undeterred and is ready to pay much more than what the existing distributors pay for the television channels. According to the executives working with Intel, the TV service will soon start by the end of this year, however the chip giant has not announced any closed deals with any of the channel owners as yet.

Previous attempts to launch Google TV failed
The semiconductor company is serious this time to get its chips into the living room, according to a video distribution source which states Intel's plans. This was earlier also established by Intel during the launch of Google TV, where the chip giant tried to convince the smart TV manufacturers, but this attempt failed leading Intel to go single and go alone.

With this new plan in store with Intel, streamingTV access would be much easy for the viewers. This plan would include a set top box with a subscription TV service, thus enabling the viewers to stream TV without completely cutting out the cable cord. With the help of this plan, both traditional as well as streaming content from popular streaming services like Redbox can be easily viewed.

According to the Wall Street Journal, it reported Intel as intending to create a paid TV service by the month of March. It was also suggested that Intel would probably be using the facial detection approach in order to organise the insertion of ads, improve the target management and also for performance management. It's launch by the end of 2012 failed mainly due to the content providers unwilling to unbundle channels for Intel to licence them.

City-by-City rollout:
This new service will be rolled out on a city-by-city basis in order to let the content providers issue licenses to selected markets first where they may be having not so good deals with the traditional cable providers. This will enable Intel to make a way around the key markets and not entirely delay the launch of the virtual cable service.

Previously, Intel licensed Comcast’s Reference Design Kit in October to aid development of its TV services, and also operate in Comcast markets.

Competition faced by Intel:
With the cable industry's annual conference this week, the launch of Intel's cable service got a new life. The Federal Communications Commission would also be able to incorporate legal protections for providers like Intel, much like it does for the other distributors.

Intel TV will have the potential of altering the media marketplace if it is delivered by the major service providers like the Comcast or the Time Warner Cable. A cable service like Intel's, capable of streaming small and big channels through an interface, thus enabling the consumers to cancel their cable subscriptions unlike services like Netflix which supplements cable.

The probable competitors for Intel's virtual cable service would be Comcast and Time Warner Cable as it would compete with the larger markets all across the world on its own. Microsoft, Apple and Sony would probably be next in line.

Major channels have different clauses in their contracts to prohibit them from selling their Internet distributor to companies like Intel. For Intel to make its mark, it sure is not an easy nut to crack.

Intel to create its very own virtual cable service

city-by-city roll out competition Computing distributors Comcast India Intel Markets Technology Time Warner Cable Top Story Fri, 14 Jun 2013 10:35:26 +0000 Shikha.hyd 1701713235 at http://themoneytimes.com Pay $200 for Android notebooks by Intel http://themoneytimes.com/featured/20130426/pay-200-android-notebooks-intel-id-1701713148.html

The market stands will soon see the Android based notebook devices other than the usual Windows 8 platform notebooks and these notebooks will be priced at approx $200.

Notebooks with Android based Platform

Intel CEO Paul Otellini in a statement last week said that PCs with Touch screen feature will soon be launched at a price of $200 but at that time the operating system of these devices was not commented upon.

The clarity on operating system was given by Intel executive vice president and chief product officer, Dadi Perlmutter on Wednesday. He killed the curiosity of many and said that these new notebooks will predominantly be Android based and they will run on Intel’s Atom mobile processor.

Notebooks with Windows 8 Platform

The price of the notebooks which will have Windows 8 Platform was not quoted by Dadi Perlmutter as that would depend on how Microsoft prices Windows 8. According to Perlmutter, the price may be little higher. Microsoft’s comments on the same are still awaited.

After facing a downfall in the market of new computers, Intel which specializes in chip formation for majority of computers and servers is pushing itself hard to make a mark in mobile market as well. The company has high hopes from its convertibles/detachable devices and the ease of converting a tablet into a notebook and vice-versa according to one’s usage has been their higher price point.

Though the exact look of Android notebooks is still not disclosed it is believed that they might look like one of those convertible devices. According to Perlmutter the PC market will gain momentum towards end of the year and new devices will hit the market stands in 2014.

He also said that Intel’s atom chips will be the core product for many low cost laptops and they will range anywhere between $399 to $499.

Giving information about future plans of Intel, Perlmutter said that Intel plans to ship LTE processors with data-only multi-mode by mid of this year. The voice multi-mode will be shipped later in 2013. As of now, Intel only deals in single-mode LTE chip.

This product is mainly put into use in access points. Because of this a huge competition is faced by Intel from Qualcomm which offers multimode LTE chips and thus dominates the mobile market today. These multimode chips from Qualcomm are used in Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4.

Facing a tough competition, Perlmutter declared that Intel will come up with mobile chip that integrates LTE at a price of silicon. He said that they expect higher volumes by 2014.

Looking at current scenario Intel definitely needs to pioneer into the Smartphone and tablet market as the PC market is seeing a downfall. According to reports by Gartner and IDC, the sale figures of PC makers in first quarter of the year were lowest till date. And this is for the consecutive fourth time such downfall in sales figure in PC market has been seen and the market is expected to slump down further in the year 2013.
Android chip Intel iPhone 5 LTE notebook operating system Samsung Galaxy S4 Smartphone Technology Top Story United States windows8 Fri, 26 Apr 2013 04:58:03 +0000 Shipra 1701713148 at http://themoneytimes.com Razer Edge gaming tablet at $999 http://themoneytimes.com/featured/20130331/razer-edge-gaming-tablet-999-id-1701713072.html

For all the technology fans, gaming is set to assume a whole new meaning as ZoomRazer’s Intel-based gaming tablet called Razer Edge will include Steam.

The benefit of this would be that the users will be able to download and install their Steam-based titles easily and making games a more fun-filled experience for PC gamers.

"The Razer Edge has more than enough power to play the latest and greatest Steam titles and it is completely built with PC gamers in mind," said Greg Coomer, product designer at Valve, adding that the gaming tablet was a great way to experience everything Steam has to offer, including Big Picture mode.

This tablet promises to provide the best experience to both PC users and gamers and that too with ease. According to few analysts this step by Chinese manufacturers is a revolt against handful of companies that have ruled the market of booming handsets, operating systems and microchips.

Samsung has postponed the launch of Galaxy S4 in MWC 2013 and this has given an opportunity to all the mobile manufacturers to intrude into the market that has grown to a record of one billion handset shipment in 2013.

Chinese manufacturers faced maximum threat from Samsung and Apple. They both accounted for more than half of the smartphone sales in final quarter of 2012. After Samsung and Apple third, fourth and fifth positions were taken by Chinese manufacturers with 5.3 percent for Huawei, 4.7 percent for ZTE and 4.4 percent for Lenovo.

Price Range of Chinese Manufacturers

According to Magnus Rehle, senior partner at telecommunications management consultancy group Greenwich Consulting, increasing demand of smartphones in developing countries will give an opportunity to Chinese manufacturers to make a mark in the industry as the price range offered by these manufacturers is affordable for people living in countries outside Europe and the US.

Operating System

Apart from price another notable feature of smartphones is their operating system. According to report by analytical house Canalys, of all the handsets sold last year, 69 percent used Google’s Android and 22 percent used Apple’s iOS. Among this data Microsoft’s new Windows Mobile operating system is struggling.

Processor Chips

Yet another important feature is the processor chip that runs the smartphones. California based Intel is offering high performance chips in various smartphones which has the completely new technology licensed by ARM. A new product, the ideaPhone K900, launched by Lenovo, which is just 6.9mm thick with a 5.5-inch high definition screen, contains an Intel Clover Trail processor.

4G Network

Apart from Chinese manufacturers, the smartphone industry faces a tough challenge from introduction of 4G network which can offer speeds similar to fixed fiber-optic connections.

"There are 3G networks in many parts of the world like in Sweden that have been overcrowded and then you have parallel 4G networks that are almost empty," said Greenwich Consulting's Rehle.

Clearly, the smartphone industry is at an interesting threshold and we shall witness intriguing trends in the coming years.
Android Apple Cell Phones Chinese manufacturers Intel mobile world congress MWC samrtphone Samsung Top Story United States Mon, 25 Feb 2013 05:01:41 +0000 Shipra 1701712939 at http://themoneytimes.com Intel launching set top box and video streaming service soon http://themoneytimes.com/featured/20130213/intel-launching-set-top-box-and-video-streaming-service-soon-id-1701712891.html

Intel Corp. declared Tuesday that it is all set to venture into the market of set top boxes this year to revolutionize the consumer’s TV experience. But Intel is aiming at getting one step ahead and is introducing a streaming service for TV that will replace the cable itself.

The talks of the Intel set-top box and video streaming service have been floating in the market from quite sometime now. However, there was no clear picture given by Intel. Huggers did not reveal much about the service yet, about the price for the box, along with the the time frame for the launch of this set top box.

Intel's venture into new projects is a step to stay alive in market
Huggers commented on the plus point of the new device that alongwith TV, it will be a boon to the non-TV gadgets users such as those who use the iPad and the likes. And unlike cable companies where consumers have limited choices for these gadgets, Intel's box will definitely improvise in this aspect.

Buzz is that Intel is exploring market for itself, as despite being the largest chipset maker for the computer processors, with the decline of PC market, it's business is also coming to a halt. People today would prefer tablets and smartphone which do not require Intel chipset, rather than a PC or notebook.

Is Intel doing right thing?
Apple CEO Steve Jobs told his biographer in year 2011 that he was thinking of something about the TV but by now, there is no news from Apple venturing into any such project. The hinderance could also be attributed to the well known fact that cable model allows a limited package choice to the audience which is more profitable to the movie studios and TV networks rather than displaying network of pay per channel.

Huggers sounded more hopeful on Tuesday, speaking at the "D: Dive Into Media" conference in Dana Point, California, when he said he is experiencing some flexibility from the media companies. "I think we can bring an incredible TV experience via the Internet, to consumers, and that is a great opportunity for programmers."

He also revealed a speciality about the set-top box that it will be able to identify via a camera the member of the family watching TV and recommend the program of their likings.
cable Intel Intel chipset Intel introducing set top box internet channels Set Top boxes Technology TV video streaming Wed, 13 Feb 2013 11:10:03 +0000 Onika Singh 1701712891 at http://themoneytimes.com Intel unveils fourth-generation processors for thinner and slimmer Ultrabooks http://themoneytimes.com/featured/20130108/intel-unveils-fourth-generation-processors-thinner-and-slimmer-ultrabooks-id-17017

Intel introduced the next-generation of processors at CES 2013, offering dramatically low power consumption and improved processing speed.

If you have always craved for thinner and slimmer Ultrabooks that look like delicious Macbooks, this could be the year when you'll find it a store near you.

The new generation of processors based on Ivy Bridge by Intel promise greater battery life and improved performance on Ultrabooks. We selected the timezone 'UTC' for now, but please set date.timezone to select your timezone. in /home/themoney/public_html/includes/database.mysql.inc on line 135
