This massive online data theft has prompted both the social media companies and security experts to take actions.

According to a report on The Times of India, researchers at Trustwave's SpiderLabs discovered the login credentials while investigating a server in the Netherlands that cybercriminals use to collect sensitive information from users in as many as 102 countries. The report states that the server was a part of a botnet known as the "Pony."

The compromised data includes more than 3,26,000 Facebook user accounts, more than 59,000 Yahoo user accounts, some 60,000 Google user accounts, and nearly 22,000 Twitter user accounts, said the cybersecurity firm adding that it has reported its findings to the affected websites and internet service providers, and has asked Netherlands authorities to take down the Pony botnet server.

In the wake of massive data hack, the affcetde companies including Facebook, Twitter and ADP have started resetting the passwords of users that have been impacted by the phishing campaign.

In an email to BBC, a Facebook spokesman said that all of the clients found in the database will have their passwords reset. "They will be notified when anyone tries to access their account from an unrecognized browser and new logins will require a unique passcode generated on their mobile phone," he said.

On the other hand, Trustwave has suggested some important tips to help you secure your online accounts and to minimize further threats. In its blog post, the company showed that people use very simple passwords like "123456," "123456789," "1234," and "password," and even re-use them on their multiple accounts.

Such simple passwords are extremely easy to crack, said security expert Graham Cluley. "People are using very dumb passwords. They are totally useless," he said.

"We don't know how many of these details still work," Cluley told the BBC. "But we know that 30-40% of people use the same passwords on different websites.”

“That's certainly something people shouldn't do," he cautioned.
Trustwave suggests online account holders to make longer passwords. In order to strengthen your passwords, the company suggests users to use combinations of letters and numbers, upper and lower case and symbols to create password, such as "My!PaSsWoRd-32." Also, avoid using birthday, ZIP code or any easy-to-guess words.
data breach data compromised data theft Facebook Google Internet online account hack online data breach Technology Top Story Twitter Yahoo Thu, 05 Dec 2013 11:03:56 +0000 NeelamGoswami 1701713739 at http://themoneytimes.com Facebook Vs.Twitter: Rivals Eying Bangalore startups for acquisition http://themoneytimes.com/featured/20131204/facebook-vstwitter-rivals-eying-bangalore-startups-acquisition.html

Social networking giant Facebook is reportedly in early stage discussions to acquire an Indian app monitoring solutions startup. Facebook has stated in its legal complaints that Mr. Tarquini who belongs to New Jersey is a spammer who has over 5 years experience in crafting the programmes in computer that includes deceptive messages, links and images on the website and facebook pages.

One of the highly notorious programs that was involved in the fake images was that it purports people to view the video that had actor Selena Gomez along with her boy friend Justin Bieber. Instead, the link created a pop up message that asked the users for free access to a facebook account. This allows an app to take control, spams the message, and sends it to the user’s friends.

Mr. Tarquini persisted in targeting the social network website after he received the information about violating the terms of the facebook site. Microsoft raised the offer to $ 33 per share but Yang felt that Yahoo was worth more.

The proposal was taken back and the investors saw Yahoo take a nose dive till its share fell to about $ 8.94. The advertising on the mobiles is helping it clamber up to a thriving mobile business.

Facebook and mobiles

Last year Zuckerberg had openly declared that he would show exorbitant business on mobile devices and this was evident when the sales figures showed that $656 million, or 41% of the digital advertising revenue was a result of the computer tablets and the mobile phones.

Ever since this was highlighted in the stocks of Facebook that seemed to have rushed forward by almost 66%. The Facebook stock had risen to $ 27 billion from $ 16 billion in a period of just about 2 months.

Zuckerberg now calls the IPO a 'valuable process' that pushed him on to newer and better ways to run his company and he now peacefully states, "Sometimes it might take the market a little while to catch up and see the results of what you're doing."

Talking about the sharing of information with NSA due to the threat of terrorism, Zuckerberg reassured the Facebook users by saying, “I think it's our job and my job to protect everyone who uses Facebook and all the information that they share with us."

He further stated, "It's our government's job to protect all of us, and also to protect our freedom and economy and companies. However, according to the online cyber experts if the people are ready to splurge on the Internet for their own personal gain or for the gain of their business, then such a business proposition is definitely a good deal to popularise your new product in the Internet world.

Victor Pan, a senior data analyst with WordStream said, "People perceive importance on what is trending, It is the bandwagon effect." which advises companies on online marketing.

Facebook currently has nearly 1.2 billion users is in the process to increase the security on Instagram as well. Last year, Facebook bought the 130 million active user photo sharing app Instagram for $1 billion and promises to have the same security measures that Facebook currently has, said spokesman Michael Kirkland.

Not only will the security of Instagram be improved within Instagram but also malicious and suspicious activity through Facebook sites and links can be reported, he said encouraging the users.

"We work hard to limit spam on our service and prohibit the creation of accounts through unauthorized or automated means," Michael Kirkland said.

Modified Zeus-first piece of malicious software:
The Zeus software which has been recently modified is the first of its kind to post false and bogus "likes" on various social networking sites according to the cyber experts dealing with cyber crime.

"Likes" from the automated software programs can easily be manipulated by the cyber hackers all across the world. The modified version of the Zeus virus controls the computers from further infection from the central working server by manipulating the users to post "likes".

According to the cyber experts at RSA, the users can also be given orders to get involved in specific operations or download some other kinds of suspicious malicious software. This is not the first time cyber hackers have used Zeus to infect hundreds of millions of PCs, it was previously also done 5 years ago when the virus first came into existence, said Don Jackson, a senior security researcher with Dell SecureWorks.

The increasing sophistication of the hackers trying to profit from the trend of the virus targeting the photo sharing app Instagram is a sign of rising importance of social media in marketing.

Buying Bogus social networking traffic has become a trend which is also supported by the Online Marketing consultant Will Mitchell, who advises clients to buy the traffic to make a mark of their own in the Online world.

Will Mitchell replied when asked about the ethics of faking endorsements, "It's fine to do for the first 100, but I always advise stopping after that." Giving an example of a client who bought more than 300,000 "likes" on Facebook against his advice completely destroyed the client's reputation. "It was just ridiculous,Everybody knew what they were doing", he said.

Computer security expert Chris Grier, a University of California at Berkeley research scientist who spent a year working on a team that investigated fake accounts on Twitter said, "The accounts are always just a means to an end. The criminals are always looking to profit".

However, the cyber experts still say that manipulative schemes of influencing social networks are unlikely to take a fall soon. Soon identity thefts can be created using the fake social media accounts rather than the creation of the fake "likes".

A fake fan on Instagram in the world of cyber fraud, can be worth five times more than a stolen credit card number.

a senior data analyst with WordStream a senior security researcher with Dell SecureWorks.
