For this, NASA has picked one out of a number of machines ranging from $300 desktop models to $500,000 warehouse builders.

The venture is being dubbed as a great achievement for the agency as it would free astronauts from carrying every tool, spare part, or anything that may be required on space.

The printer would craft objects by protruding layer over layer of plastic made from the long strands enveloped around large spools. These spools would substitute for scores of extra instruments and hardware in the upcoming mission. However, the mission is only a demonstration of printing.

The machines were initially developed to be used on Earth or confront the space challenges such as problems of launch or pressure of functioning in the orbit. This encapsulates issues like microgravity, different air pressures, extreme temperatures and limited power. So, the basic purpose of 3D printers was to tone down such problems.

NASA had hired Silicon Valley startup Made In Space to construct something that would not be hackneyed. According to the director of engineering at Nasa''''s Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, about 35 miles south of San Francisco, "If you want to be adaptable, you have to be able to design and manufacture on the fly, and that''''s where 3D printing in space comes in.”

According to Aaron Kemmer, CEO of Made in Space, "Imagine an astronaut needing to make a life-or-death repair on the International Space Station. Rather than hoping that the necessary parts and tools are on the station already, what if the parts could be 3-D printed when they needed them?"

Fleshing out the details, the engineers at NASA have been 3D printing miniature satellites that would be shuttled out of the International Space Station.

3-D printer’s inventor Andrew Filo, who is consulting with NASA on the project, has said, "Any time we realize we can 3D print something in space, it''''s like Christmas. You can get rid of concepts like rationing, scarce or irreplaceable.”

Though the mission is initially a demonstration of printing, finally it would have to capture gasses moving out from the extruded plastics, print their own parts for self-repairs and recycle printed products.

Originally Published on 2013-09-30.
3-D Printers Andrew Filo Gadgets International Space Station NASA News NASA Project Space News Technology Technology Top Story United States Sun, 23 Feb 2014 06:56:42 +0000 Neha Dutt 1701713612 at http://themoneytimes.com Lift Heavy Objects With Smart Phone Controlled Smart Lifting Device http://themoneytimes.com/featured/20140222/lift-heavy-objects-smart-phone-controlled-smart-lifting-device-id-1701713758.html

The latest lifting device that is controlled by smartphone has the ability to lift heavy items, which can weight about 23 kgs just at the press of a button. This makes it easy for the person to handle it easily and install it effectively. A Provo, Utah researchers'' team developed this innovative myLifter device. This device can be highly useful to lift and store an array of heavy objects such as bicycles, cargo boxes etc., says the description about this device placed at the website of Kickstarter.

Another added benefit of using this myLifter device is that you can use it to raise bigger things such as the hardtop of a jeep or a storage platform. This is because the device can be synchronized using the smartphone app and can keep it under control with the touch of a button. If one cannot afford to use the smartphones or tablets to control this device, they can enjoy the same control with the help of a remote control.

This remote option is also a great choice, as it will allow one to pair it with many dozens of myLifter devices, provide them each with a name and then enjoy full control of these devices.

Each myLifter device includes a new built in feature called “smartLIFT”. It allows the user to programme it by presetting the high and low point for each item that one needs the device to lift or lower it. As soon as the high points and low points are set, one needs to just press the smart lift option and the smart lower button present in the device and it would automatically place the item at the desired places at the desired heights. For extra heavy objects, one can also buy hooks, hardware and straps to make the most out of the device.

Originally Published on 2013-12-18.
app on smartphone Gadgets Gadgets Handhelds lift heavy items myLifter device Smart Lifting Device smart phone smartphone app Technology Technology Top Story United States Sat, 22 Feb 2014 05:38:49 +0000 dhivya 1701713758 at http://themoneytimes.com Google glass users can now wink to take snaps! http://themoneytimes.com/featured/20140129/google-glass-users-can-now-wink-take-snaps-id-1701713761.html

Google marks the closing of 2013 with massive updates on its Google glass. The student has developed the low cost printing device by name, Deltaprintr.

Schechter said that though their college had a 3D printer that was a laser and powder based, it required them to spend US $500 for purchasing a bucket of powder that can offer just one or two prints. Schechter also added that the 3D printer at college was seldom used as it was so expensive and many classes were not offered in the curriculum.

He then sought the advice of his sculpture professor on developing a new 3D printer that can be built with plastic and also had good help from his three friends. Along with his business partners, Schechter launched a campaign to kick-start the awareness about low cost printer and its innovative design to the masses. The Deltaprintr by Schechter costs just US $475 for un-assembled ones and US $685 for assembled type, which is a larger one. This is way too low when compared to the price of brand new Makerbot 3D printer that costs US $2000.

Reports of Mashable state that the extra large (2.5 feet) version of Deltaprintr is equipped with a dual printing ability, has a diameter of 2 inches and height of 6 inches more and is available at the rate of US $705.
Schechter’s Deltaprintr makes use of three stepper motors that are placed under the platform made of acrylic where the printing is performed. These motors can control the carriages by moving the hot end and this allows it to create the 3D printing of various objects.

As the design of this innovative printer by Schechter consists of very less parts, its customers can save a lot of money as there would be no need to spend on spare replacement. The developer of Deltaprintr also added that while MakerBot makes use of belts in order to move the print head, his 3D printer uses fishing line. This allows the user to expand it to make it a bit taller by changing the rods made of aluminum. This makes it more accurate and faster than MakerBot.

This story was originally published on 27/12/2013.
3D printer affordable Deltaprintr Gadgets Gadgets Shai Schechter Top Story United States US College Student Wed, 22 Jan 2014 05:36:44 +0000 dhivya 1701713769 at http://themoneytimes.com Go grab an anti-bacterial phone case to keep your iPhone germ-free http://themoneytimes.com/featured/20140121/go-grab-anti-bacterial-phone-case-keep-your-iphone-germ-free-id-1701713746.html

Are you a person who has an abnormal fear of dirt or germs? The new report comes courtesy of ZDNet Korea, which cites sources at South Korean-based electronics company.

If true, Samsung is going to incorporate eye scanner that will use iris verification technology into its smartphone range next year. With this new eye-scanning capability in their phone, the users can unlock their smartphone with an eye scan.

Although the iris identification technology tends to be rather expensive, it is said to be more secure than the 'Fingerprint to Unlock' technology Apple Inc uses in its Apple iPhone 5S and HTC in its One Max.

Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone maker, already launched their current flagship, Samsung Galaxy S4, with the retina tracker which recognizes your eye and face movements and starts/pauses a video when your eyes are moved away from the screen. It is only now that Samsung is planning to launch the retina scanner to unlock the device.

According to the ZDNet report, Samsung is applying the high-quality ‘first QHD’ (2560x1440 pixels) resolution, which is four times the pixels a 720p (qHD) display packs, as a main technology into its Galaxy smartphone. The upcoming QHD screen is also sharper than today's Full HD panels, thanks to its higher pixels ratio.

The other rumored specifications of the upcoming next-gen smartphone series include 64-bit processor, a 14nm 640bit Exynos 6 CPU, 5.25-inch touchscreen, 16MP Isocell camera, Android 4.4 operating system and a metal body.

Samsung is expected to launch its Galaxy S5 smartphone range in Mobile World Congress expo in February 2014.

Originally published on 2013-12-18
fingerprint reader Gadgets Korea Korean smartphone company retina (eye) scanner Samsung Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Technology Top Story tracks facial and eye movement unique identification technology unlock smartphone upcoming Samsung smartphone range without touching the screen Tue, 21 Jan 2014 06:59:21 +0000 Natalie James 1701713759 at http://themoneytimes.com Apple iPad Air, iPad Mini Retina hit Indian stores http://themoneytimes.com/featured/20131209/apple-ipad-air-ipad-mini-retina-hit-indian-stores-id-1701713743.html

Adding more to its next generation of high-tech gadgets, Apple Inc. has rolled out the new models of its iPad tablet in the Indian market. As of now, a release date around the third quarter of next year was hinted at, perhaps by September 2014, keeping in line with Apple’s tradition of unveiling new products around fall.

If launched, these would become the largest iPhones yet and push Apple into the phablet category for the first time. This technology will allow a touchscreen to detect finger pressure. Testing is currently underway for pressure-sensitive technology and it might be integrated in later models.

There has been no official confirmation from Apple about this, as Natalie Kerris spokesperson for Apple, refused to give any sort of comment.

If launched, the two models would become the largest iPhones yet and push Apple into the phablet category for the first time.

Gadgets iPhone New Designs Include Larger Screens and Enhanced Devices new report Technology Top Story touch screen sensors Mon, 11 Nov 2013 06:04:33 +0000 Neka Sehgal 1701713703 at http://themoneytimes.com A sixth-generation “iPhone Air” in the pipeline? http://themoneytimes.com/featured/20131105/sixth-generation-iphone-air-pipeline-id-1701713689.html

When it comes to the Apple, it’s never too soon to start speculating about the next device in the pipeline!

The tech giant has just rolled out the latest versions of the iPhone and iPad and there is a lot of buzz it’s about the next generation smartphone, which is being popularly referred to as the “iPhone 6.”

Even though the Cupertino California based firm has between now and next September to put the final touches on the supposed iPhone 6, some fantastic concepts regarding the design of the gadget are being passed around the tech blogosphere.

One such appealing idea about the next generation iPhone is envisaged by Italian designer Federico Ciccarese of Ciccarese Design, a site well known for publishing beautiful concept images.

Dubbed "iPhone Air” he visualizes it as a slimmer more rounded handset with curved edges that essentially looks like a much smaller version of the iPad Air/iPad mini.

Apparently, it features the same Touch ID sensor as the iPhone 5s, but, the edges are far more prominent than on any of the three iPhones and appear to be made from what looks to be an anodized aluminum band.

The speakers look more like those on the iPad Mini than the iPhone 5s.
