It has been quite an eventful week for Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg!

A day after ringing the Nasdaq opening bell which took his multi-billon dollar company public, Zuckerberg tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan.

In a surprise intimate ceremony at his Palo Alto, California home he married his girlfriend of nearly a decade.

The young billionaire made it official and public by changing his status on Facebook from "In a Relationship" to "Married."

He also added to his Facebook timeline: “Married Priscilla Chan.”

The wedding date had been planned for months, but the perfect timing was more of a coincidence. The duo was waiting for Chan to finish medical school where she had been studying pediatrics.

A surprise ceremony
The stunned guests, less than a 100 including family and friends were under the impression they had assembled to celebrate Chan's graduation from medical school at the University of California.

Even, Facebook's COO Sheryl Sandberg was unaware the "party" was actually a wedding. One guest said, “Everybody was shocked.”

A company spokesman said Zuckerberg personally designed the wedding ring for his wife featuring “a simple ruby”. The gathered guests were served delicacies from the couple’s favorite Palo Alto sushi restaurant.

The dessert, mouse-shaped chocolates which the couple ate on their very first date together was catered by L.A. Burdick Chocolate.

Dating for approximately nine years
The couple met at a fraternity party as undergraduates at Harvard University in 2003. Chan has been Zuckerberg’s girlfriend since then.

While Zuckerberg dropped out of college to work on Facebook, Chan stayed on to earn her undergraduate degree in 2007.

According to her profile, Chan then taught science to fourth and fifth graders at the Harker School in San Jose for two years before starting medical school.

On her graduation day, Zuckerberg had written on his Facebook page, "I am so proud of you Dr Chan."
