Michael, 49, and Kate, 27, a former Star reporter and short-lived Jon Gosselin love interest, got engaged over the weekend. The couple, who started dating late last year, formally announced their engagement plans Wednesday.

"She's been there for five years with me. I think a friendship is more important than anything when you have a relationship, and this is the strongest one in my life," papa Lohan told Us Weekly magazine.

The bride-to-be Kate, who on Tuesday, according to msnbc.com, was wearing an engagement ring, reportedly had brought Michael to meet her father in Florida over Easter Weekend to get his approval.

"I'm very traditional, so I wanted him to talk to my father," she said. "Michael went down with me to Florida for Easter, to meet my father to ask for his permission, and my father gave his blessing."

After getting father’s approval, Michael popped the question, Kate told People magazine adding that although no date has been set for the wedding, but "it will probably be in New York, probably at the end of this year."

About his trip to Kate’s house, Michael, who turns 50 on April 27, said: "I was in a hot tub with her dad at their house, and I said, 'There's something we have to talk about.' He said, 'Oh my God, don't tell me Kate's pregnant!'"

Michael further said. "I told him I was looking at the future, and I wanted to make it formal and take it to the next level. After that, he approved, then Kate and I discussed it and she discussed it with her dad."

Pair ecstatic about their nuptials
The couple intends to get married by end of 2010 at Oheka Castle in New York.

“I'm ecstatic,” about the impending nuptials, Kate said. I'm very happy. Michael and I have known each other for four years, and it's meant to be."

Echoing his fiancée’s sentiments, Michael told People, "I'm ecstatic. I've never met anyone who's been there for me like Kate. She's always been there for me. The one thing about Kate is that she doesn't come with baggage."

Lohans less-than-pleased with the news
But Lohan family has different sentiments than the newly engaged Michael Lohan’s. Michael’s ex-wife Dina and daughter Lindsay are both disgusted that he is engaged to Kate Major.

The Mean Girls star has said that the news of her father planning to remarry makes her sick.

Of the engagement, LiLo told Us, "I'm gonna vomit! I so didn't need that info. ... Yuck!"

Meanwhile, Michael has reportedly said that he hopes Lindsay and the rest of his children will attend his wedding "if Dina doesn't thwart it like she did my dads funeral."

Michael has four children with ex-wife Dina, including Lindsay Lohan and aspiring singer Ali Lohan. He fell out with Lindsay after suggesting that she should go back to rehab.
