Google+ rolls out new visual updates!!

The new update will boost the size of cover photos considerably, giving users the chance to make the featured image or message really stand out.

Just a day before Facebook’s huge News Feed revamp unveiling, Google has fired back with some interesting improvements for its social networking platform Google+.

Google+ got a few minor updates to its interface today. It will now offer new visual changes for its profile and pages including a "Local" reviews tab, larger cover photos and a prettier “About” section. The notable design changes will gradually roll out to users.

According to Sara McKinley of Google, "We spend lots of time listening to your feedback, and today we're launching some profile and page updates that you've been asking for... Everything's rolling out gradually, so check back soon if you don't see it yet. Once it’s live (at plus.google.com/me), let us know your thoughts in the comments!"

Bigger cover photos
The new update will boost the size of cover photos considerably, giving users the chance to make the featured image or message really stand out.

The new photo dimensions are up to 2,120px by 1,192px to fit 16:9 screens perfectly when fully expanded. Prior to the change the cover photos were 940 x 180px.

"This way more images can be used as cover photos, and there’s more room for your selection to shine," Google said.

Tab for “Local” reviews
Another update is the inclusion of a tab for users' Local reviews. This section is for storing all your local reviews, highlighting your favorite restaurants or the places you’ve traveled and any reviews you may have written about your experiences. Of course you can hide the tab via settings if you don’t want them shown.

The “About” tab
Finally, the “About” tab section has gotten more vibrant and easier on the eyes. It consists of separate cards for different types of information, including your Story, Places, Education, Basic Information, Links and more.

Each card is tinged with a border of different color and has its own prominent “Edit” link governed by your custom privacy settings where you can determine what circles do or don’t have access to your personal information.

Some comments on update news

"Awesome, I love the larger cover photo that you've included. And finally more movement with local reviews/zagat. Can't wait to see the final roll-out of your improvements. Keep up the hard work I know how hard it would be satisfying an entire social network," Justin Fournier says.

Dishing out praise Diego Neves says, "Cooool! Quero logo essa atualização!!."

"Very nice. It also seems to be moving towards a design that would accommodate the logical ordering of posts by theme or topic, which would be a game changer," Rob Ferguson posted.

However, not all were happy, with the new Google+ features! "Do people really want a cover photo that takes up half the screen? No thanks. Waste of space," Charles Carrigan posts.

What do you think of the redesign? Do you think Google+ will ever be able to compete with Facebook?
