Facebook losing users in Canada, US--report

According to the report, the number of U.S. users dipped in May by 6 million, dropping from 155.2 million at the start of May to 149.4 million at the end of the month.

Facebook seems to be losing popularity, at least in the United States and Canada. In fact, it has suffered major traffic drops recently, with millions of U.S. and Canadian FB users saying sayonara to the social media powerhouse, according to multiple tabloid reports.

Though Facebook’s growth is declining in some regions, it is still climbing towards 700 million active users worldwide, having reached 687 million monthly actives by the start of June, according to a report released by Inside Facebook, a research and marketing group that tracks Facebook’s growth and news.

US traffic plummeted in May

According to the report, the number of U.S. users dipped in May by 6 million, dropping from 155.2 million at the start of May to 149.4 million at the end of the month.

"This is the first time the country has lost users in the past year," said Eric Eldon of Inside Facebook.

Canada shows the same trend
The social-media giant also lost 1.52 million users in Canada during the same period, dropping to 16.6 million -- that's an 8 percent drop.

According to Inside Facebook’s estimates, the social network’s overall growth has been lower than normal for the second consecutive month.

“Going forward, we’ll be watching closely to see what longer-term trends emerge,” Eldon said. “Bugs in the Facebook advertising tool that we draw this information from, seasonal changes like college graduations, and other short-term factors, can influence numbers month to month and obscure what’s really happening.”

Traffic declining in other regions
The United Kingdom, Russia and Norway also lost users, but not to the same extent as North America, losing 100,000 users each.

"Meanwhile, the United Kingdom, Norway and Russia all posted losses of more than 100,000," Eldon said. "If these countries -- most of whom had adopted Facebook many years ago -- had not lost users, and instead posted even small gains, Facebook would have had a much more typical month."

New users’ entry is less
According to Inside Facebook’s estimates, the social network’s overall growth has been lower than normal for the second consecutive month.

Facebook gained 11.8 million new users over May, down from 13.9 million accounts over April, Eldon said.

Previous to those two months, Facebook had grown by at least 20 million new users over the typical month in the past 12 months.

"While there have been a few months that have registered lower growth numbers, they have not been back to back," Eldon said.

Facebook responds to the report
Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for Facebook responded to the Inside Facebook report. In a company statement, she said that Facebook is happy with its traffic, but didn't address the report or its analysis.

"From time to time, we see stories about Facebook losing users in some regions," the statement read.

She added, "Some of these reports use data extracted from our advertising tool, which provides broad estimates on the reach of Facebook ads and isn't designed to be a source for tracking the overall growth of Facebook. We are very pleased with our growth and with the way people are engaged with Facebook. More than 50% of our active users log on to Facebook on any given day."
