Windows 7 outperforms Vista in initial days: Report

New York, November 7 -- As anticipated by Microsoft Corp., Windows 7 has not only registered strong sales but also surpassed those of Vista within the first few days after its launch. New York, November 7 -- As anticipated by Microsoft Corp., Windows 7 has not only registered strong sales but also surpassed those of Vista within the first few days after its launch.

According to NPD Group, a market research company, Windows 7 sales have topped Vista by 234 percent for the initial days, thus generating 82 percent more revenue than its predecessor.

Though some users have encountered problems while installing Windows 7, the new operating system has proved to be better than Vista.

Further, its well received launch, relatively positive reviews, discounts, aggressive pricing and marketing, fresh signs of markets recovering etc. all have worked in favor of the software giant, Microsoft.

Within days after its much awaited debut on Oct. 22, Windows 7 was declared the best seller on Amazon, occupying the top three slots.

PC sales fail to pick momentum
Though Windows 7 has outperformed Vista and early sales appear strong, its success has not translated into higher PC sales so far.

Although companies like Hewlett-Packard, Dell, and Lenovo have reported 49 percent increase in sales of PC in the first week after Windows 7 launch, the figures are low compared to PC sales in the first week after Vista’s release. Sales of computers with Windows 7 are down 4 percent.

But Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD, believes the comparison is not fair as Vista was released in January, when PC sales are higher, compared to Windows 7 launch in October, when PC sales are the weakest.

Further, doubts linger whether PC sales will gain momentum in the coming days as majority of the users are either using their old computers, as Windows 7 is working well on these systems, or opting for cheap netbooks or laptops.

Users’ reactions
Whether Windows 7 will ignite PC sales is yet not known, but the new operating system has surely lived up to users’ expectations.

Majority of the readers online, discussing Windows 7, believe that high sales have been reported because the new operating system is better than its predecessor.

A user named Freddy J. Nager commented on mashable.com, “This isn't at all surprising. Vista was so awful, people are hurrying to replace it.”

Another user named npa191 posted his view on engadet.com, “make a good OS it sells well, And this is the first legit Windows OS I have run on my PC in a long time.”

“Thats how Microsoft holds and maintains is dominant market share. Give the initial copies away at a low price so it becomes universally adopted and rely on volume to generate profits. Both the consumers and the company win this way,” stated a user named deccangroove on engadget.com.

Vista isnt horrible after a few settings changes. I actually love it as I have it on my work laptop. But windows 7 sales are higher because microsoft did this before. They pretty much released a huge beta version of windows 7 - vista. This was also done with ME and windows NT (xp / 2000), which were amazingly better OS's.

Windows 7 dropped Benchmarks and Software

I tried windows 7 and had no choice but to switch back due to serious performance issues "New Bios and Drivers Installed" and program incompatibility.

The purchase of Windows 7 and the lackluster pc purchase levels may have a lot to do with these problems.

Word of mouth lets your friends know they will either loose performance or loose access to programs they need!

When will someone do a survey on Windows 7 compatibility? I know college students are swarming to MAC and Netbooks with Linux.

I am sorry, I liked Windows, but right now - I have been soured due to this giant bloated poor performing OS. Where did the XP guys go? Why didn't they do Windows 7?
