Los Angeles, November 6:Rene Perez and Eduardo Jose Cabra Martinez, the half brothers of the Puerto Rican hip-hop group Calle 13, were the big winners at the 10th annual Latin Grammy awards in Las Vegas, Nevada on Thursday, November 5, 2009.

The duo swept all of their nominated categories at the awards, which were held yesterday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Big Grammy grabbers
Lead singer Rene Perez, who raps as "Residente," and his half brother Eduardo José Cabra Martínez, who performs under the name Visitante, took home trophies for best album and best urban album for "Los de Atras Vienen Conmigo" and best short-form video for their work with salsa legend Ruben Blades on "La Perla."

Accepting the record of the year trophy for "No Hay Nadie Como Tú," Residente said from the stage, “This award, I have to dedicate to many people."

Residente dedicates award to Sosa, explains why
He specifically dedicated the golden gramophone for album of year to Argentine folksinger Mercedes Sosa, who died in October at age 74, according to the Associated Press.

"We love her very much," said Residente of socially conscious folk singer Sosa, whose "Cantora 1" was named best folk album. "Her music will live forever."

"May she rest in peace. An applause for Mercedes Sosa, please," he said.

According to an AP report, Residente later in the pressroom explained why he dedicated the award to the woman, who helped found the "Nueva Cancion" movement, which merged folk traditions and leftist politics in the 1960s.

"She is a voice who should never die, and young people should listen to her," he said, according to the AP report. "In an era of dictatorship and difficult times, she wasn't afraid. That's why I dedicated it to her."

The duo also took home best alternative song for "No Hay Nadie Como Tú," a collaboration with Mexico City rockers Cafe Tacuba, and recording of the year.

Other notable winners included Cuban singer Omara Portuondo, a member of the celebrated "Buena Vista Social Club" band, who won Best Contemporary Tropical Album for "Gracias"; Laura Pausini, who took home best female pop vocal album for “Primavera Anticipada”; Puerto Rican Luis Fonsi, who won song of the year with "Aqui Estoy Yo"; Vicente Fernández, who took home trophy for best ranchero album for “Primera Fila"; Argentine singer and composer Fito Paez, who was named best male pop vocal; Luis Enrique, who won best salsa album for “Ciclos”; Wisin y Yandel, who left with best urban song for “Abusadora” and Mexican singer Alexander Acha, who was named Best New Artist.
