Just like the previous week, on Tuesday night’s elimination episode, too, the show hosts first revealed the names of celebrities who were in the bottom three- Aaron Carter, Michael Irvin and Mark Dacascos - based on their Monday's performances.
Double elimination
This meant that one of the three couples would flat-out go home, while the two others would perform against each other in the dance-off.
Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Irvin and professional partner Anna Demidova were eliminated after an overall low score, while Food Network host and martial arts champion Dacascos and his partner, Lacey Schwimmer, lost in a dance-off with Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff.
Irvin sent straight home
Football player Irvin and his partner Anna earned 23 points out of 30 for their fox-trot on Monday's episode. Although the couple garnered points more than Dacascos, they failed to capture enough viewer votes to keep themselves in the competition.
Judges' scores are combined with home-based viewer votes to determine which contestants are eliminated each week.
"Last night was a great night, and to see the audience here standing up, it's their way of saying they appreciate the hard work," Irvin said after learning his fate, according to the Associated Press report.
Dacascos missed chance
While the retired NFL star Irvin and Anna went home straight without even a dance-off, TV personality Dacascos got a chance to stay in the competition.
Dacascos, who performed on Monday with a substitute partner after his usual pro, Lacey Schwimmer, contracted flu, earned 19 points for his misguided samba from the judges. Lacey was back for Tuesday's episode to dance against Carter and Smirnoff.
The "Iron Chef America" host's cha-cha-cha was perfectly fine but the judges found Carter’s jive more impressive.
AP quoted Dacascos as saying after knowing his fate that being on the show was "one of the greatest experiences of my life."
"It's certainly much harder than it looks on television," he said. "The bond you create with the pro dancers, my dancer, the other celebrities, it's really special."
List of remaining DWTS contestants
The exit of both Michael Irvin and Mark Dacascos has narrowed the field down to five dancers.
Below is the list of remaining five celebrity contestants and their professional dancing partners who will hit the dance floor with their performances when “DWTS” continues next week on ABC:
Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff
Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough
Mya and Dmitry Chaplin
Kelly Osbourne and Louis Van Amstel
Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson
Tuesday's elimination episode also featured performances by Rod Stewart, country singer Colbie Caillat and Ballas Hough, the rock band created by pro dancers Mark Ballas and Derek Hough.
