Ottawa-- Canada's unemployment rate rose 0.2 percentage points to 8.6 percent in October, reflecting a loss of 43,000 jobs, Statistics Canada reported Friday.

Despite moderate gains in the transportation and warehousing sectors, most of the month's decline was seen in retail and wholesale trade, "other services" and natural resources, the report said.

"Adult women aged 25 and over and youths aged 15 to 24 accounted for all of the employment decline in October." the report said.

Full-time employment increased slightly during the month, but part-time employment fell by 60,000 jobs, StatsCan said.

The worst employment declines were seen in the manufacturing and natural resources sectors, which each saw an 11 percent drop. The construction and transportation/warehousing sectors each recorded a 5.8 percent decline in employment.
