MLB: Detroit 5, Oakland 3

Oakland, Calif. July 1: Placido Polanco homered and Armando Galarraga picked up his second consecutive win in Detroit's 5-3 win over Oakland Tuesday.

<strong>Oakland, Calif.  July 1:</strong> Placido Polanco homered and Armando Galarraga picked up his second consecutive win in Detroit's 5-3 win over Oakland Tuesday.

Galarraga (5-7) held Oakland to two hits and a run over 6 1/3 innings while striking out five and walking six.

Mark Ellis hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth for the Athletics, who managed just five hits and lost for the sixth time in their last seven games. Gio Gonzalez (0-2) took the loss with three runs and seven hits in five innings.

Gonzalez got into trouble right off the bat by walking Curtis Granderson to lead off the game and then serving up Polanco's two-run homer.

Detroit took a 3-0 lead in the third when Miguel Cabrera doubled and scored on Ryan Raburn's single.

After Jack Cust singled in Oakland's first run in the fourth, the Tigers went ahead 4-1 when Raburn doubled and came home on a single by Brandon Inge.

Polanco drove in Detroit's fifth run in the top of the ninth before Ellis homered in the bottom of the inning off Fernando Rodney with Nomar Garciaparra on first.
